WASHINGTON — Declaring “homosexuality is not a job qualification,” Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee sharply criticized President Barack Obama for nominating a gay man who grew up near Dayton to become the new secretary of the Army.

Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas competing to win the backing of the most socially conservative Republicans in early voting states such as Iowa, charged that, by nominating Eric Fanning, Obama “is more interested in appeasing America’s homosexuals than honoring America’s heroes.”
